The Chicken Point Cabin Is A Loft-Like Modern Dwelling In Northern Idaho.

The Chicken Point Cabin is a modern, 3,400 square foot loft-like cabin designed by Tom Kundig, Design Principal and Olson Kundig Architects and is situated on a half acre of land.

It is located on the crystal clear Lake Hayden in Idaho, USA, surrounded by the Coeur D'Alene National Forest. According to the Hayden Chamber of Commerce, the cove that the cabin is placed on is positioned at an altitude of 684 meters above sea level. The lake has over 80 kilometers of timber shoreline and beaches, of which Kundig has taken successful advantage. The lake is also surrounded by the Bitterroot Mountain Range. Because of the high latitude, the region has mild summers and cooler winters.

The idea for the cabin is that of a lakeside shelter in the woods — a little box with a big window that opens to the surrounding landscape. The cabin’s big window-wall (30 feet by 20 feet) opens the entire living space to the forest and lake. Materials are low maintenance—concrete block, steel, concrete floors and plywood—in keeping with the notion of a cabin, and left unfinished to naturally age and acquire a patina that fits in with the natural setting. The cabin sleeps ten.

The cabin is made of three general parts. These are the main concrete block containing the major portion of the house, a plywood insert, and a large steel fireplace created from a piece of the Alaska pipeline.

The front door (shown above) is a normal width, yet 19 feet tall in order to accommodate ski equipment for the surrounding environment, as well as to mimic the pine trees of the dense forest. This is one of the many features that incorporates the surrounding nature into the design of the house; filtering out the environment while maintaining the feeling of being a part of it.

A massive window, over 6 meters wide by over 9 meters tall faces the expansive lake. This window is attached to a wheel that is easily turned by a crank, which rotates the window outwards and opens the interior of the cabin up to the lake:

The above photos of the window wall are courtesy of Turner Exhibits, who was responsible for the kinetic window design.

Besides this large window and the master bedroom window on the same wall, there are very few windows. This tunnels the focus through the major window, and draws the eye to the lake. By having the entire lake-facing wall made of glass, as well as the majority of it being able to open, the residents of the house are able to feel as if they are outdoors, while still being sheltered by the environment; another environmental filter while still feeling a part of nature.

Inside the use of color and texture are important in the interior of this casual family cabin. Strong blocks of color help to define space and direct the eye. Texture in furnishings provides a soft but strong counterpoint to the hard, raw material palette. Custom tables using plywood and polyurethane create a direct connection to the architecture while providing durability and function. Some of the unique interior features include the custom continuous steel pipe fireplace, the wood slab work surface supported by a truck suspension spring, and the custom stainless steel bathroom sink.

Handcrafted Wooden Trays Inspired By Architectural Facades

above: via Omero 38

Italian architect and designer Michele De Lucchi has created a stunning series of hand crafted wooden wall mountable trays based on architectural facades, called Vassoi da Muro.

Each of the seven "Vassoi da Muro" trays, is titled so as to suggest an actual address on a street named after an ancient Greek or Latin poet that De Lucchi admires.

via Orazio 59:

In De Lucchi's own words:
Trays can be beautiful objects but are often ignored, mainly because people don’t know where to put them as they tend to occupy too much space. Sometimes it can be difficult to find a practical corner to stow them in.

The wall trays are a new category of exquisitely handcrafted wooden trays that can be hung on the wall as architectural models. But they can also be used in every respect as service trays.

These trays are designed to be hung on the wall and when not in use they become artworks of beauty. So their normally humble purpose is transformed into a dignified opportunity to represent the fronts of buildings, with windows, doors and balconies - as in a fully fledged architectural office with models scattered about on tables and hanging on walls.

The wall trays are made with superb natural walnut heartwood and are actually available for purchase for $1,650.00 each and can be bought online at Moss.

Below are the beautiful little water color sketches of the facades by DeLucchi (shown above):

New Modern Dollhouse is a Reproduction Of Arne Jacobsen's Own 1928 Villa

I suppose it's the combination of being a female, a wannabe architect and having a predilection for modern design that makes me somewhat obsessed with modern dollhouses.

Whenever I come across a new one, which is rare and infrequent since the discontinuance of the Bozart Kaleidoscope Dollhouse, I get very excited.

So, when I saw that Inhabitots mentioned a new dollhouse by Minimii that is a small scale reproduction of the world famous architect Arne Jacobsens' Villa in Charlottenlund, I simply had to investigate further.

Of course, I'm going to provide you with images of the dollhouse AND the original house that inspired it... because... well, that's what I do.

While other blogs and magazines are excitedly reporting that the house can be purchased... truth is, production of the item has been delayed due to lack of investment capital. They continue to be optimistic about planning to offer the house prior to the summer of 2010 and are hoping for a retail price below 1200.00 USD. I certainly hope so because this is one cool dollhouse.

The dollhouse exterior:

Comparing the details of the original house to that of the dollhouse:

As Inhabitots reported, "the house was designed by Linda Stenberg and Claus Hojer Hansen, the Danish creative directors of Minimii and features a roof and four walls that may be mounted and dismounted, allowing more children to play at once. A small collection of designer furniture (Egg and Swan chairs courtesy of Fritz Hansen) as well as tiny commissioned modern art pieces, and many more chic amenities which stay in place via magnets.

Stenberg and Hojer Hansen will furnish the dollhouse with the aforementioned furniture, as well as Vipp trash cans, an exclusive miniature art piece by artist Poul Pava, kids play furniture from Bobles, kitchens and bathrooms from Design by Us, and lighting from Normann Copenhagen! They are also collaborating with the famous doll maker, Maileg, to create the very fortunate, design savvy family who will live in the miniature Jacobsen home.

In addition to providing kids with an amazing dollhouse and all the furnishings, the Minimii team offers, “We want to talk to adults who have an interest in design and who see the dollhouse as a design object in itself.”

I really hope they meet their goals because I'm dying for one of these as well as the miniature versions of the Arne Jacobsen Ant, Egg and Swan chairs that fit within it, also produced by Minimii:
